Black Business Spotlight: Meet Dre Carothers, Owner of Culture Cuts Barbershop and Salon
Dre Carothers is the Black Business featured this edition! Owner of Culture Cuts Barbershop and Salon, in Owensboro, KY, he is turning out fresh cuts one at a time.
Starting solo in 2016, Dre Carothers, owner of Culture Cuts Barbershop and Salon, is still turning out fresh cuts one at a time. This 6-station salon is one of only two licensed African American barbershops (salon) in Owensboro, KY.
WHY DID YOU START THIS BUSINESS?
I started this business because there were not many employment opportunities for Blacks in this area and I needed something substantial with validity to take care of my family. I didn’t know a thing about barbering. I went to barber school for 10 months and liked it. There is nothing like working for yourself: setting your own hours and working at your own pace.
WHAT DO YOU HOPE THIS BUSINESS PROVIDES FOR THE COMMUNITY?
I hope Culture Cuts gives the African American community a better perspective for professional hair care, beauty and a great customer experience. The services include men and women cuts, styles, shaves, knots, twists, locs and braiding. We also offer nail services. We are a one stop shop for hair, beauty, and personal care.
WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BIGGEST CHALLENGE THROUGHOUT LAUNCHING YOUR BUSINESS?
The biggest challenge has been getting new customers in the chair. We’ve offered several promotions to increase visibility in the community. It is not an easy task, but building the customer base is necessary for growth and expansion.
WHAT IS YOUR ADVICE TO ASPIRING ENTREPRENEURS?
My biggest advice to aspiring entrepreneurs is to set and goal, create a plan to accomplish that goal, and write the plan down. Always follow through because it will be worth it in the end.
