After canvassing the Tepe Park neighborhood with their father Eric II, three brothers: Eric III, Elias, and Evin launched Tillman Brothers Lawn Care, a full-service lawn business offering mowing, weed removal, and bush trimming to help beautify their community. Their father, who has been actively involved in helping guide the business, shared how the idea came together and what the experience has meant for his sons.
WHY DID YOU START THIS BUSINESS?
The idea was sparked by both a need in the neighborhood and support from the Tepe Park Action Project funding. As we were walking through the neighborhood together, we noticed a lot of lawns, especially for elderly residents, that weren’t being maintained. The boys started asking questions and wanted to help. Through the action project, they had funding to purchase equipment, and they completed 10 yards for free, before they could take on paying customers.
WHAT DO YOU HOPE THIS BUSINESS PROVIDES FOR THE COMMUNITY?
Their father said the goal is not only to provide a needed service, but also to set an example. They want to show other young people that you can start something of your own. At the same time, they’re helping people who may not be able to take care of their lawns themselves, and that helps improve the entire neighborhood.
WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BIGGEST CHALLENGE THROUGHOUT LAUNCHING YOUR BUSINESS?
One of the biggest challenges has been building a consistent client base to keep the boys busy. Maintaining equipment, especially battery-operated tools, which require ongoing resources beyond the initial funding they received, has also been a challenge. Getting started was one thing, but keeping everything running has been another.
WHAT IS YOUR ADVICE TO ASPIRING ENTREPRENEURS?
One of the biggest lessons the boys have learned is persistence. Don’t give up on your vision until it becomes reality.
WHAT IS NEXT FOR TILLMAN BROTHERS LAWN CARE?
Looking ahead, the brothers are focused on growth and consistency. They want to become masters of their craft: continuing to improve every day.
