With technology continuing to evolve, scammers are finding new and convincing ways to target consumers. One of the latest tools being used is deepfake technology, which allows criminals to create realistic-looking videos, images, and even voice recordings that mimic real people. These can be used to impersonate loved ones, coworkers, or trusted figures in an effort to gain access to money or personal information.

The Better Business Bureau (BBB) reminds consumers that while these scams may appear highly believable, there are still ways to spot the warning signs and protect yourself. Deepfake scams often rely on creating a sense of urgency or panic, so taking a moment to slow down and evaluate the situation can make all the difference.

If you have a few extra moments, consider using these simple tips to help protect yourself from deep-fake scams:

Pause before reacting: If you receive an urgent message or call asking for money or sensitive information, take a step back. Verify the request using a separate, trusted way of contacting that person or organization.

Look for small inconsistencies: Deepfakes can be convincing, but details like unnatural facial movements, odd blinking, or mismatched lip syncing may signal something isn’t right.

Don’t rely on appearances alone: Familiar faces, voices, and even phone numbers can be manipulated. Always double-check before trusting or responding.

Limit what you share online: Scammers often use photos, videos, and voice clips from social media to create deepfakes. Adjust privacy settings and be mindful of what you post publicly.

Stay informed: As technology changes, so do scam tactics. Keeping up with the latest warnings can help you recognize and avoid potential threats more quickly.

Staying informed and cautious is key as these scams continue to evolve. Taking a moment to question unexpected requests and verify information can go a long way in protecting your identity, finances, and peace of mind.
