The Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation (EVSC) Board of School Trustees met Monday, April 6, 5:30pm with all members present: Paul T. Gamblin, Christopher A. Kiefer, Karen Ragland, David Hollingsworth, Melissa C. Moore, Michael J. Duckworth Sr., and Amy DeVries. The meeting covered policy changes, a leadership transition, student safety, and district updates.
Good News
The Board highlighted several accomplishments across the district, including:
- The Bosse Dance Team (Pridettes) winning a national championship
- North High School Indoor Percussion earning a state title
- New Tech Institute Robotics Team qualifying for state competition
- Students at Evans School leading hands-on school improvement projects
During the district spotlight, updates on the Summer Musical program was shared, with a focus on building a consistent pipeline for student involvement in the arts.
Policy Changes
The Board reviewed and discussed two policies as part of an ongoing review process, but no action was taken at this meeting:
- Policy 4113.02, which outlined school choice options under the former No Child Left Behind Act, including allowing students to transfer out of underperforming or unsafe schools
- Policy 5610, which established how the district evaluates instructional programs, including student progress, curriculum effectiveness, and overall school performance
District officials said the school choice policy is tied to federal law that has since been replaced by the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), while the evaluation policy reflects an outdated accountability framework.
Under ESSA, more control is given to states and districts, meaning school improvement and accountability systems are now handled locally rather than through federally mandated measures. Officials noted neither policy is required under current law.
New Child Abuse Reporting Requirements Reinforced
The Board approved a policy strengthening requirements for reporting suspected child abuse and neglect. The policy requires:
- Immediate reporting to the Indiana Department of Child Services (DCS) or law enforcement
- Mandatory reporting by all school employees, with failure to report classified as a Class B misdemeanor
- Staff training every two years on recognizing and reporting abuse
- Age-appropriate instruction for students in grades K–12 on abuse awareness
The policy emphasizes both prevention and accountability in protecting student safety.
Personnel Changes
During personnel updates, the Board noted that Angela Oliver, Principal of Glenwood Leadership Academy, will transition to a new role as Chief Officer of School Culture, beginning in July. The district will begin the process of selecting a new principal for Glenwood Leadership Academy.
School Name Changes Approved
The Board approved two school name changes, effective for the 2026–2027 school year:
- EVSC Virtual Academy will be renamed Hoosier Digital Academy
- Plaza Park International Preparatory Academy will return to Plaza Park Middle School
The changes were approved as part of the consent agenda without separate discussion.
The next meeting will be April 20th at 5:30pm.
