What happened at City Council this week?

The Evansville City Council is the city’s legislative and fiscal body. Its nine elected members — six district representatives and three at-large — pass local laws, approve the annual budget, and oversee how public dollars are raised and spent. The Council also appoints members to boards and commissions serving the community.

This week’s Evansville City Council meeting was held on February 23 at 5:30 p.m., with all nine members present: Ben Trockman, Rita Taylor, Zac Heronemus, Kendra Hatfield, Angela Koehler Lindsey, Jim Brinkmeyer, Mary Allen, Paul Green, and Courtney Johnson. Every ordinance on the consent agenda was approved for the next meeting.

Both items on the regular agenda were unanimously adopted:

Transfers of Appropriations: ORDINANCE F-2026-01

Transfers include funding for the Micro contract to the correct account, as well as funds within the Casino Fund, which were transferred into separate accounts within the fund, to help with budgeting.

Rezoning Real Estate: ORDINANCE R-2026-01

Rezoning of 2222 W. Virginia St and 2227 W. Michigan St from R2 to R3 to convert the current church building into apartments. The future apartments are expected to have studios up to 2-3 bedroom apartments, and prices will be according to square footage. Neighborhood residents expressed concerns about the uncertainty of the project, to which the council emphasized that approving the ordinance does not mean approval of the project.

In miscellaneous business, the stormwater management annual report for 2025 was given by Karan Barnhill, and a review of the Evansville Fire Department for 2025 was given by Fire Chief Tony Knight.

The next meeting will be on March 9, 2026, at 5:30 p.m.
