Tepe Park’s #TechMe Program Opens Doors to Technology for Local Youth
A neighborhood technology program is helping Tepe Park youth build skills in coding, robotics, and digital creativity—while growing confidence for the future.
Tepe Park’s #TechMe program began with Debbie Calhoun, her love for technology, and drive to make a positive impact on her neighborhood. Calhoun’s interest in technology and cybersecurity began in her early career at an insurance company and only grew from there. Once she realized that she rarely saw other African Americans within her field, Calhoun decided to be a part of the change that she wanted to see. She began the program and continues to teach it almost completely independently.
The #TechMe program is for kids in grades 4 – 12 to learn about the world of technology. Youth explore things such as coding, robotics, and digital creativity. Calhoun says one of her favorite things about the program is watching the kids grow not only in their understanding of technology, but their overall confidence.
Since it originated in 2022, the program has received the Celebration of Leadership Award from Leadership Everyone and a grant from Toyota Indiana to help fund projects for the kids involved.
#TechMe meets the first Saturday of every month, 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Tepe Park Clubhouse, 1212 S Garvin St.
