A Table for Everyone: The Tri-State Comes Together for Thanksgiving

A season of sharing, service, and community care across our neighborhoods

Across the Evansville region, this Thanksgiving season has revealed something truly powerful: a community choosing to care for one another. Even as the government shutdown created added stress for families, neighbors didn’t hesitate to step up. From food giveaways to community dinners, from home-delivered meals to neighborhood acts of kindness, the Evansville Region proved what is possible when people choose connection over division. Here are some snapshots of gratitude, service, and love from across our community.

Healing the Broken Hearted Ministries, led by Pastor Lawrence Thomas and Theresa Thomas, hosted their Annual Thanksgiving Dinner on Saturday, November 15, at the John F. Kennedy Center in Henderson, KY. The celebration brought together local churches, community organizations, and the City of Henderson for an afternoon of warm meals, fellowship, and gratitude. Surrounded by neighbors and friends, the gathering reflected the spirit of unity and compassion that continues to shine across our region this holiday season.

The Mayor’s Interfaith Council hosted its second annual Interfaith Thanksgiving Service on Wednesday, November 19, at First Presbyterian Church in Downtown Evansville. Faith leaders and congregations from across the city came together—representing a wide range of traditions, including Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Catholic, and others—to offer readings, prayers, and reflections centered on gratitude, unity, and our shared responsibility to one another. The service included a land acknowledgement recognizing the Indigenous peoples connected to the very ground where First Presbyterian now stands—an important reminder of the original caretakers of this region and the history that shaped it.

Unity of Churches distributes 650 baskets to families in need

In a season when churches often work independently to provide Thanksgiving baskets, nine congregations—Memorial, Dove Chapel, The Rock Ministries, Little Valley, Nazarene, New Hope, McFarland, St. James, and Zion—chose a different path this year, uniting to ensure every family had a Thanksgiving meal.

Hundreds of volunteers from the partner churches gathered on Friday, Nov. 21, to pack roughly 700 baskets for distribution the following day. Each family received a $25 gift card for meat and a basket filled with traditional holiday sides.

Angel Brooks, a lead organizer, said the collaboration exceeded expectations. “Everyone was very pleased with our first try at working together to give out Thanksgiving bags with the Baptist churches. Our goal was simply to come together and serve as many people in the community as possible—and we accomplished that. We also had the chance to interact and spend time together as one. There’s no greater feeling than helping others and doing it alongside fellow believers made it even more special. We hope to collaborate again, and I know God will bless those efforts. We appreciate every person who helped serve our community.”
