Officer-Involved Shooting Leaves Community Grieving as Police Prepare to Release Body Camera Footage

Hours before police release body camera footage on Tuesday afternoon, community members gathered outside the Civic Center chanting “Justice for Everett,” calling attention to the death of Everett Nunn, a well-known Evansville resident shot following a domestic disturbance call on November 22.

The Evansville Police Department held a 1:30 p.m. press conference today where Sgt. Anthony Aussierker walked reporters through the footage and provided new details about the moments leading up to the shooting.

A Disturbing 911 Call and Rapid Police Response

Dispatchers first received a 911 hang-up around 8:23 a.m. When they reconnected, the caller told them her husband and son were “about to fight.” As dispatch tried to gather more information, the caller stopped responding, though an active disturbance could still be heard.

When the responding officer arrived, the woman who made the call was standing outside the home’s entrance. She warned the officer that someone was “going to jail” and that a gun was inside the house.

Inside the home, the officer entered a small, cramped living room, where Nunn, his son, and another young woman were present. Within seconds of entry, the officer encountered Nunn holding an object in his hand. The officer ordered him to “drop it” before firing six shots.

Object Identified as Replica Device

Police later determined the object in Nunn’s hand was a smoking device designed to resemble a firearm. Sgt. Aussierker displayed a photo of the item, noting its close similarity to a real handgun. Immediately after shots were fired, both individuals in the room told the officer the device was not a real gun.

After the home was secured, officers provided medical aid. Nunn was transported to Deaconess Midtown Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Police Acknowledge Tragedy and Community Impact

Sgt. Aussierker addressed the emotional weight of the incident during the press conference:

“No officer anywhere puts on their uniform with the desire to be involved in a deadly force encounter… We acknowledge that a family is mourning the loss of a husband, a father, a neighbor, a friend.”

Nunn’s family viewed the body camera footage privately before it was shown to the media.

Investigation Underway

The officer involved — a member of EPD since 2021 with additional prior service at the Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office — has been placed on paid administrative leave pending an internal investigation conducted by EPD.

During a search of the home, police recovered a real firearm inside a bag carried by a woman seen at the doorway in the footage.

Police have not provided a timeline for completing the investigation.
