A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held Wednesday, Nov. 5, to celebrate the opening of the new activity zone at Evansville’s Garvin Park. When the Deaconess Aquatic Center was built in 2021, the existing pool, basketball courts, picnic areas, and playground were removed to make space for the new facility.

Andrea Hays, Chief Program and Impact Officer at the Welborn Baptist Foundation, said that once construction was complete, restoring the park became a key priority. “We wanted to make sure the whole park was back to its original glory, because it’s an amazing park,” Hays said.

The new activity zone marks the first step in Garvin Park’s larger master plan. It features a fully equipped playground with shaded structures, basketball courts, new restrooms, a drinking fountain, and a wheelchair-accessible electronic game called “Neos.”
