Community Spotlight: Deon Chester Honored with Indiana Football Hall of Fame Induction

Evansville native and Castle High School alum Deon Chester was officially inducted into the Indiana Football Hall of Fame on September 26, 2025, during a ceremony at Castle High School in Newburgh, Indiana.

Chester, the son of Allen and Virginia Chester and nephew of Robert Chester, graduated from Castle in 1984. Known as a standout athlete in multiple sports, he shined most brightly on the football field — first as a Knight, then as a Cardinal at Ball State University.

A High School Standout

At Castle, Chester was a force on both sides of the ball, playing wide receiver and safety.

  • 1983 All-State football selection
  • Indiana All-Star football selection
  • Senior Team Captain and All-SIAC selection
  • Recorded 32 receptions and 7 interceptions in two varsity seasons
  • Earned nine varsity letters across football, basketball, baseball, and track & field

Ball State Career

Chester attended Ball State University on a football scholarship, graduating with a B.S. in 1988 and later a Master’s degree in 1999.

  • Set program records with 146 receptions and 2,256 receiving yards

Coaching and Professional Contributions

After his playing career, Chester dedicated himself to coaching and mentoring the next generation of athletes. His coaching experience spans Lawrence Central High School, Ball State, Indiana University, Temple University, and Western Michigan. He also instructed at the Bishop and Dullaghan football camps.

In 1996, Chester was selected for the NFL Summer Fellowship with the Miami Dolphins, further underscoring his football expertise.

Chester and his wife, Katrina, are proud parents of two children. He is currently employed with the University of Illinois System in Urbana, Illinois.
