Residents are invited to participate in an upcoming community blood drive scheduled for Friday, April 11, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Memorial Baptist Church Gymnasium, 605 Connie Robinson Way.

The drive, organized in partnership with the American Red Cross, is designed to strengthen the local blood supply and ensure hospitals have the resources needed to treat patients facing a wide range of medical situations, including emergency trauma, surgeries, cancer treatment, organ transplants, and chronic illnesses such as sickle cell disease.

Blood donations are used daily by hospitals to care for accident victims, patients undergoing medical procedures, and individuals with serious health conditions. Maintaining a strong blood supply helps ensure that lifesaving treatment is available whenever it is needed.

For the Black community, blood donation carries additional significance. Sickle cell disease affects about 100,000 people in the United States and primarily impacts individuals of African descent. About 1 in every 365 African American babies is born with the condition. Many patients rely on regular blood transfusions as part of their treatment. Because certain blood characteristics are more likely to match within the same ethnic background, donations from Black donors can help increase the chances of finding compatible blood for those patients.

At the same time, every donation collected during the drive may be used wherever the need is greatest, helping patients with a variety of medical needs.

Preparing for a Successful Blood Donation

Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of water in the days leading up to your appointment.

Eat a healthy meal: Eat a nutritious meal a few hours before donating, including iron-rich foods and complex carbohydrates.

Feel well: If you are feeling sick, wait until you are feeling better before donating.

Bring identification: Donors should bring a valid ID to their appointment.

Wear comfortable clothing: Choose clothing with sleeves that can easily be rolled up.

Arrive on time: Plan to arrive a few minutes early for your appointment.

To schedule a donation time, call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) or visit RedCrossBlood.org and enter MEMORIALBAPTIST to schedule an appointment.

Each blood donation can help save multiple lives and plays an important role in supporting hospitals and patients throughout the community.
