From Struggle to Success: Malcom Wickware’s journey to the stage
BY SERITA CABELL
As I prepared to take my place on stage at Ivy Tech Community College’s commencement last Friday, I found myself reflecting on the encounters of the evening. Among them was a conversation with Malcolm Wickware, a native of Evansville, who I remember as a rambunctious little boy running around Memorial Baptist Church. An attorney now, Wickware and his wife Safiya were attending a reception prior to the ceremony, along with others. We spoke briefly as I congratulated him on an honor that he would receive during the commencement ceremony: the Distinguished Alumni Award. I would later hear the details of Wickware’s journey from adversity to achievement-a story that left an impression on me-and one that I felt compelled to share with our community.
It was a conversation during the reception with another attendee, a lawyer, tasked with confirming Wickware as he was receiving his Juris Doctorate degree and was up for the task of being licensed by the Indiana bar, that offered a brief glimpse into Wickware’s journey. The lawyer shared that typically, the interview lasts 30-45 minutes, but he was captivated and inspired by Wickware that they talked for close to two hours. While he couldn’t disclose the details of that conversation, Wickware’s story was one of unwavering determination.
During the presentation of the Distinguished Alumni Award, I listened as speakers recounted Malcolm’s journey: from high school expulsion to earning high school credentials, an associate degree, a bachelor’s degree, and finally a Juris Doctorate. His transformation from a troubled youth to a distinguished alum was evident as graduates approached him with admiration, inspired to follow his path into law.
I witnessed Malcolm’s interactions with his pastor and fellow attendees and couldn’t help but feel a sense of pride. Here was a man who had overcome immense challenges, not only turning his own life around but also serving as a beacon of hope for others.
My mother’s words echoed in my mind: “No matter the situation, if the Lord allows you to wake up another day, it is your chance to hit the reset button.” Malcolm had not only hit that reset button but had propelled himself forward, making a positive impact in our community as a practicing lawyer and part-time public defender.
In Malcolm’s story, I saw the embodiment of perseverance and the triumph of the human spirit. His journey serves as a reminder that with determination and faith, even the most daunting obstacles can be overcome.
