Spelman College receives record-breaking $100M gift
BY RASHEEDAH AJIBADE
Spelman College, on January 18, 2024, announced a historic $100 million donation, marking the largest single contribution ever to an HBCU (Historically Black College/University), as the college celebrates its 100th year since its official naming in 1924.
The generous gift came from businesswoman and philanthropist Ronda Stryker and her husband, William Johnston, Chairman of Greenleaf Trust. For decades, Stryker, a Spelman College Trustee since 1997, has focused on empowering women through higher education and supporting marginalized groups.
Of the $100 million, $75 million will fund endowed scholarships to attract and support outstanding students, aiming to eliminate financial barriers to enrollment. The remaining $25 million will be allocated to develop an academic focus on public policy and democracy, enhance student housing, and provide flexible funding for critical strategic needs.
