Western Academy Scholars Earn Educational Travel Opportunities
From classroom projects to cross-country learning adventures, Western Academy scholars are turning achievement, service, and hands-on skills into opportunities that reach far beyond Evansville.
Scholars at Western Academy at the H.L. Neblett Community Center were rewarded for a year of academic achievement, community service, and hands-on learning with educational trips and unique experiences across the country.
Western Academy at the H.L. Neblett Community Center is an academic enrichment program for African American and biracial males in grades 3–12 that encourages, empowers, and educates young men to excel and create a positive footprint in the world.
Throughout the year, students participated in activities ranging from computer coding and building structures to constructing drumline cases and other skill-building projects. After completing their assignments, maintaining the program’s required grade point average, and giving back through community service, scholars earned trips to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; St. Augustine, Florida; and Kentucky Kingdom in Louisville, Kentucky.
Continuing their educational journey, two certified scuba-diving scholars will travel to Honduras later this year to participate in coral reef and environmental conservation training.
The program’s mission is to encourage, empower, and educate young men to exceed expectations, excel in all they do, and leave a positive footprint on the world.
