The 12th Annual Black History Book Fair features Lincoln High School alum Dr. Delores Johnson Kelly-Price
The Soul Writers’ Guild (SWG) will hold its 12th Annual Black History Book Fair on Friday, Jan. 26, at the Evansville African American Museum, Inc., 579 Sondra Matthews Way (formerly South Garvin).
Featured guest author will be Dr. Delores Johnson Kelly-Price, an Evansville native and graduate of the Historic Black Lincoln High School in Evansville, Ind., Class of ’61. She recently completed a meditation trilogy of books: “Victory in the Storm: 30 Days of Hope-filled Meditations (2021)”, “Victory on the Horizon: 30 Days of Inspirational Meditations(2022)” and “ Victory in Everyday Life: 365 Daily Meditations(2023).”
The daughter of the late Rev. & Mrs. Joe Johnson, she holds a bachelor’s and master’s degree from the University of Evansville. Also she holds a Ph.D. from Loyola University, Chicago, Ill., and completed certification at the Harvard Principals’ Academy.
“We are excited to have Dr. Price as our honored guest author, kicking off the New Year with a highly educated and spiritual hometown jewel,” said Aretha Sebree-Graves, president of the Soul Writers’ Guild. “We believe that all attendees will be inspired by the insights she will present and leave the museum more ready to serve our community.”
Dr. Price’s education career started as a second grade student teacher at Scott Elementary School and as a 4th grade teacher at Culver Elementary School, where she followed renowned educator, the late Dr. Mattie Miller as a television teacher at the EVSC Educational Television Station. She later became the first African American school counselor at Stringtown Elementary at the same time that the late Martharee Mayes became Stringtown’s first African American principal. Dr. Price also was the first
African American counselor at Washington Middle School and the first African American assistant principal at Glenwood Middle School.
After serving in several other principalships, Dr. Price was an associate professor, Department Chair and Interim Dean of the School of Education over 14 years at Alabama A & M University in Huntsville, Ala., where she retired in 2017. Over several years, she has traveled to every continent except Antarctica and has traveled to Africa on many occasions.
Dr. Price is the mother of two children and one granddaughter. She notes, “I now see myself as a writer who at the core is an encourager.
“I really enjoy sharing knowledge and giving people encouragement, and my greatest joy is demonstrating to others through practical writing and teaching how to improve their lives,” she added.
In addition to Dr. Price’s presentation, other authors/vendors will have their books and/or CDs on sale and given the opportunity to share their their experience of writing and publishing.
